We are still getting everything started, so be sure to keep up with announcements for dates and how to sign up for different opportunities on our social media. Some of the following programs won’t be available until a later time.
Everyone knows that there is a huge difference between the structure of a ballet class and classes in most other forms of dance. Ballet classes were structured meticulously to best benefit us as dancers, but this structure also means that as adult ballet dancers we rarely get to enjoy classical ballet choreography on our own bodies. Sure, we get many combos in center, but after doing it once or twice we move on. These Choreo Workshops are a time to explore ballet choreography while also serving to create an opportunity for those who wish to have video of themselves dancing ballet to be filmed.
These workshops are open to dancers of all levels but are intended for ballet dancers with a solid foundational knowledge already.
Workshop StructureThe structure of these workshops is having 2 weeks of the same class to allow people to spend time working on the choreography in their body. It is not required to go to both weeks, you can choose to go to just one or both.We know there are many who do not want to be filmed dancing, but there are almost no opportunities for ballet dancers to get video recordings of them dancing. In order to provide a safe space for all, we have structured each workshop as a 2 hour block of time, so that anyone who doesn't want to be filmed will still get a full 1.5 hour ballet class before filming starts, and anyone who doesn’t wish to be filmed can stay and watch or leave if they wish.
2 hour class
Week 1 vs Week 2
The first week will be mainly focused on the combo, with filming occurring at the end in groups on phones
The second week will have professional lighting and videographer
*These workshops will primarily be focused on classical/neoclassical ballet choreography or repetoire depending on the teacher. If you are interested in regular contemporary ballet choreography classes, we recommend checking out Annie St.Marie's Contemporary Ballet class at Westlake Dance Center.
As adult ballet dancers there are few opportunities for us to advance our technical skills in consistent ways outside of private sessions with teachers. The Intermediate Skills Series are a series of classes that build on one another and give time to focus on the details of various techniques. The teacher of the series will choose a skill to focus on, for example Italian fouette or tour en l'air, and create a barre and center that will help facilitate learning that desired skill. The number of classes in that series will be up to the teacher to determine how many session they believe will be needed to work on their chosen skill, but on average they will be 2-4 classes.
*These classes are open to dancers of all levels but are intended for ballet dancers with a solid foundational knowledge already.
STBC Pupils is a 3 month opportunity for you to refine your ballet technique and perform ballet choreography for a professionally recorded dance video. Pupils is intended for dancers who are already familiar with ballet technique hoping to apply that technique to a project while simultaneously expanding their technical skillset.
The first month will be focused on technique that is present in the final choreography, the second month is a mixture of technique and rehearsals to learn choreography, and the last month is finishing rehearsals and filming the video.
*There is a $75 fee required to participate in Pupils to help fund our program. If you are interested in participating but cannot afford the fee, reach out and we can discuss options!
